I will admit, the amount and quality of new car technology has gone above and beyond for quite a few years now. However I have reservations with the introduction of some technology attached to replaceable parts. Let's talk about rain sensors,
The rain sensor is a technology available to a wide range of new car buyers that allows us to be even more lazy and not have to physically turn our wipers on. I cannot truly judge any here as I have automatic headlights and enjoy their ease of operation. My reservations lie with the manufacturers placement of the said device. In my search for images of rain sensors I mostly found rural and back-yard applications and none of them required a piece of glass to operate it seems.
Here's the bottom line, as that is what most are interested in. The cost to the consumer for a front windscreen (windshield) for the average Australian car will at least triple. In some cases the price increase will be much more severe where a genuine glass from the manufacturer is a must. As a windscreen fitter, all I can do is shake my head in disgust at their lack of thought. Even our own beloved Holden and Ford have made a windscreen replacement a much harder task than it ever has been. In the case of the VE Commodore and BF Falcon I recommend a genuine replacement glass from the manufacturer regardless of rain sensors.
